Keeping Pets and Their Seniors Together

Pet Food and Veterinary Care Asistance Grant Recipient, LucyStudies have demonstrated that pet ownership can benefit the elderly in so many ways; they are less likely to suffer from depression and loneliness, have lower blood pressure, cholesterol and triglycerides, and increased opportunity for exercise, activities and socialization.

Caring for a pet gives a sense of purpose; a reason to get up in the morning, and can help combat depression, one of the most common problems the elderly face today.

All too often, low-income elderly are forced to make a difficult choice, providing for their own basic needs or the needs of their beloved pet.

They will share their food with a pet, compromising their nutrition, and forgo needed medication to provide for their pet, compromising their health and well-being.

Eventually, when the pet becomes too much of a burden on their well-being and meager finances, the pet is surrendered to a shelter where he/she faces a very uncertain future.

The goal of this program is goal is to reduce the surrender of pets due to the owner’s financial inability to provide care for the pet.
